    Biography
Excerpts from Obituary in Minneapolis Star Tribune, December 11, 2005
EUGENE MCCARTHY 1916 - 2005 Minnesota senator shook world in '68 A DFL Party architect, Eugene McCarthy roiled the political waters for nearly 50 years.

    Early Years

Eugene Joseph McCarthy was born on March 29, 1916, in Watkins, Minn., 20 miles south of St. Cloud. He grew up in a two-story cream-colored house on a nameless street in the shadow of a structure that seemed far too large for the tiny town - St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

His father, the son of Irish immigrants, was a livestock buyer and a storyteller. His mother, from devout Bavarian stock, was a gentle influence who raised four inquisitive children.

Gene was an especially accomplished student and ballplayer who left home after the 11th grade for St. John's, first for the prep school and then the university, from which he graduated with highest honors in 1935.
After a teaching job in North Dakota, he returned to Collegeville to consider a contemplative life at the abbey. He lasted nine months as a novice before taking a civilian intelligence post in 1944 at the War Department in Washington.

The next year, McCarthy married Abigail Quigley, with whom he would have four children and who would greatly influence his political career.

Once asked about the habit of senators to marry into wealth, he named the Rockefellers of New York and the Mellons of Pittsburgh. "As for me," he said, "I married into the Quigleys of Wabasha."

While McCarthy was teaching sociology at the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul in the late 1940s, his interest in politics intensified to the point that he engineered a revolt of moderates within St. Paul's DFL Party. Then in 1948, the year of Humphrey's famous civil rights speech and Harry Truman's improbable presidential victory, McCarthy was swept into Congress.

"There are altogether too many technicians in Washington now," he said as he and Abigail prepared to drive east in their new Nash. "I guess I agree with Plato that it's the philosopher who should rule."

    Burial
He was buried on 14 Dec 2005 in the Saint Paul's Episcopal ChurchyardG in Woodville, Rappahannock, Virginia, United StatesG.
