    WASHINGTON, D.C. - Abigail Quigley McCarthy author, political activist, Chatham summer resident and wife of former Minnesota Senator Eugene Joseph McCarthy died in her home last Thursday evening at the age of 85 from complications due to breast cancer.

    Ms. McCarthy was born on April 16, 1915 in Wabasha, Minn. Her father was the publisher of the local newspaper and served as mayor of the town. When she was nine years old, her mother died, and as eldest daughter Ms. McCarthy took up considerable responsibility for raising her two younger sisters, Ellen and Anne, and younger brother Stephen.

    She graduated from St Felix's high school in Wabasha and went on to the College of St. Catherine, a women's college in St Paul, Minn., where she studied English Literature and graduated 1936 as a Phi Beta Kappa. She went on to take a M.A. at the University of Minnesota and did further graduate work at the University of Chicago and the creative writing program at the Breadloaf School of English.

    She began work as a public high school teacher in Mandan, N.D., where she met Eugene McCarthy. They moved back to Minnesota and married in 1945 and settled in St. Paul, where she taught college at the College of St. Catherine while her husband taught at the nearby college of St. Thomas.
    In 1948, her husband ran for and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat, and went on to serve five terms in the House. In 1958 he was elected to the U.S. Senate to which he was re-elected in 1964.

    In Washington, Ms. McCarthy, in addition to raising four children, continued to play an active role in politics, holding various chairmanships in the Congressional Club and the Women's National Democratic Club and was charter member of Washington's International Club. She also was active in the ecumenical movement, the civil rights struggle and the fight for women's rights, serving on the board of the National Conference for Interracial Justice, the advisory board of the Women's Equity Action League and the Women's Political Caucus. She was founding president of the Clearing House on Women's Issues.

    In 1968, her husband ran for the Democratic presidential nomination to challenge Vietnam War policies of fellow Democrat President Lyndon Johnson. During that campaign, Ms. McCarthy played a major role as an advisor, campaigner and political organizer. Shortly after the campaign, the McCarthys separated, and Ms. McCarthy returned to her writing career, becoming a columnist for the magazine Commonweal, a lay Catholic review of public affairs, literature and the arts, and a book reviewer for The Washington Post and the New York Times. In 1972, her highly praised memoir "Private Faces/Public Faces" appeared.

    For her efforts on the part of women's rights and social justice, she was awarded six honorary doctorates. In 1985, the College of St. Catherine established the Abigail Quigley McCarthy Center for Women, a women's studies program that works to integrate new research and scholarship on women into college curricula and provides a national award program to support research into issues related to girls and women. Ms. McCarthy continued writing her column for Commonweal until a few months ago.

    She is survived by her husband, her children, Ellen, Michael and Margaret McCarthy, her brother Admiral Stephen Quigley, and five grandchildren.
