    Obituary
The Press Democrat (Santa Rosa, CA) - May 13, 2007

Alys Edna Durenberger, a longtime activist on behalf of people with developmental disabilities, died Wednesday.

She was 91 and was suffering from non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Durenberger's work in Sonoma County included running the Special Olympics swimming and bowling programs.

In an autobiography for her family, she wrote: ''My last son had Down syndrome and that child gave direction to my life. ... I have always been proud of the time and effort that I put in on the programs.''

Durenberger helped start North Bay Industries, which runs training, housing and employment programs for developmentally disabled adults. She also was instrumental in founding a Lake County library for parent education for children with development disabilities.

She started a woodworking shop for developmentally disabled adults called Wood Haven in Cotati, which later merged with Middle Way, a group that employs and trains adults with developmental disabilities.

For several years, she served on the Developmental Disabilities Area IV board, a government-appointed panel that advocates for services for the disabled. She also was a board member of the California Association for Retarded Children.

She was born in Canada and moved to California when she was young. She moved to Marin County in 1941. In 1969, she and her late husband, Robert, bought 10 acres near Cotati.

She is survived by three children, Jerome Durenberger of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Ann Mathewson and John Durenberger, both of Cotati; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A vigil service will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Parent-Sorensen Mortuary, 650 Keokuk St., Petaluma.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 150 St. Joseph Way, Cotati. Burial will be in Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno.

The family suggests memorial contributions to North Bay Industries, 5720 Labath Ave., Rohnert Park 94928.
