    Obituary of Christian L. Schmitt
Belle Plaine Herald, June 13, 1904

CHRISTIAN SCHMITT DIES - BUSY LIFE OF WELL KNOW BUSINESS MAN AND PROMINENT CITIZEN BROUGHT TO AN END.
On Monday morning, June 13th, '04, an old and prominent resident of this borough passed from us in the death of Christian Schmitt. He attained the ripe old age of 87 years. For the past three years he was in poor health, though until then he enjoyed a rugged constitution. Old age can be said to be the cause of his death.

Mr. Schmitt was born in Oberemmel, near Trier, Germany, Sept. 29, 1817. He emigrated to America in 1857, coming to Chicago where he remained three months. He then took up his residence here, where he engaged in the blacksmith business with his brother Nic. about four years. He was the founder and the proprietor of the Belle Plaine Brewery.

Surviving him are four children, Jacob Schmitt, Mrs. W. H. Weibeler, Mrs. S. Bowler, of Denver, Colorado; and Matt Schmitt. Twenty-nine grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren also survive him. His wife preceded him thirteen years ago, and three children have also departed.

Mr. Schmitt was a successful business man and an upright citizen. He enjoyed the respect of everyone who knew him, and the affection of those bound to him by closer ties.. His death is felt by all.

The funeral will take place tomorrow, Thursday, morning at 10:00 o'clock from St. Peter and Paul's Church, leaving the house at 9:30. Those from abroad expected to be present are Mr. and Mrs. F. Nicolin, Sr,. and Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Nicolin, of St. Paul; Nic Simon, Chicago; Mrs. Schu, of Milwaukee, Peter Schneider, of Hilbert, Wisc.; J. N. Schramm and daughter Mrs. Fahey, of Green Isle; Wm. and Peter Hilgers and sisters, and Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Schmitt of Jordan; Peter Monzel, of Webster, S. D.; Mich. Schmitt, West Superior, Wisc.; J. B. Conter, of Shakopee; John Adams, of Mankato.

    DEATH TAKES KATHERINE WEIBELER
Katherine Weibeler, 83, well known lifelong resident of Belle Plaine, died Saturday evening, March 4, at the New Prague hospital where she had been a patient for less than a week.
She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Weibeler, longtime merchants of Belle Plaine, and was born here on December 19, 1883. She attended Pillsbury Academy at Owatonna and for many years assisted in the operation of the family store.
Later she and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Wheeler, conducted their own store in the west portion of the Weibeler building, in which she was later joined by her brother John, and after his death by her sister Clara. Not until six or seven years ago did she disassociate herself from store management.
She was an active member the American Legion Auxiliary until her recent illness. Two sisters and one brother survive her; namely Mrs. Clara Heywood, Belle Plaine, and Mrs. Angela Durrenberger of Perham, and Dr. Christian Weibeler of Adrian.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at St. Peter and Paul’s Church, Father Omar officiating at the Requiem Mass. Interment was in the parish cemetery.
Pallbearers were Fred Heywood, Don Heywood and Don Heywood, Jr., of Minneapolis, Warren Gordon of Little Falls, Christ Schmitt and Robert Sass of Belle Plaine.

Death Came Unexpectedly - Frank Weibeler Is Taken in the Prime of Life
Very unexpected was the death last week of Frank Weibeler, a life long resident of Belle Plaine. He was a victim of the disease rare in the north, called pellagra, which is a deficiency in certain vitamins. Taken to the hospital in Minneapolis on July 29, his condition was not thought very serious. Word came, however, on Wednesday night of last week that he had taken a sudden turn for the worse, and at 11:15 that night he died.
Throughout his lifetime here, Frank Weibeler was popular as a boy and man. Always friendly and pleasant, he numbered his friends by all who knew him. His age was 58.
He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Weibeler and was born in Belle PLaine November 25, 1878. He attended the local public schools and St. John's University, and at an early age embarked in the mercantile business, as he had virtually grown up in his father's store.
His first business venture was the ownership of a general store at Iona, but shortly disposed of that and returned to Belle Plaine to be associated with his father in the big store here. Following retirement of W.H. Weibeler from the mercantile business, Frank established his own grocery store and operated it until last fall when he sold out and retired.
In 1902, he married Miss Anna Becker of Jordan, who with one son, Dr. Earl V. Weibeler, are left to mourn the untimely passing of husband and father. There are four brothers, Peter, of Minneapolis, William M. of Des Moines, Iowa, John of Belle Plaine, and Dr. Christian Weibeler of Adrian; and three sisters, Katherine of Belle Plaine, Mrs. Clara Heywood of Minneapolis and Mrs. Angela Durrenberger of Perham.
Frank Weibeler served in earlier years on the borough council, was for forty years a member of the Belle PLaine fire department of which he was chief for 10 years, was a charter member of the Belle Plaine K. of C., of the Catholic Foresters and long a member of the German Catholic Benevolent Society.
The funeral was held Saturday morning with requiem mass at Sts. Peter and Paul's church, Father Godfrey officiating, with interment in the parish cemetery. taking part in the funeral procession were members of the fraternal societies to which he belonged and fellow firemen from Belle Plaine, Chaska, Jordan, and other nearby towns.
Active pallbearers were F.J. Keup, Frank Johnson, J.A. Mohrbacher, W.J. Gatz, J.S. Effertz, and Jerry Hanlon. Honorary pallbearers: Eugene Johnson, J.A. Schoell, C.A. Christenson, Edw. Lynch, A.A. Hahn and J.F. Schmidt.
Among those who came from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Weibeler and daughter Ethel from Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. P.H. Weibeler ans son Paul, from Minneapolis, Mr. and Mrs. J. Durrenberger and daughter from Perham, Mrs. Clara Heywood and sons from Minneapolis. Dr. Christian Weibeler was not here, as he was on a trip to Catalina Island, California, and unable to be contacted.
From St. Paul came Mr. and Mrs. Frank Monzel, daughter and son; Mrs. Elmer Topping, Mr. and Mrs. Christ Schmitt, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Seifert, Mrs. Kohler and son frank.
From Minneapolis, Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Shaughnessy, Mrs. Vie Martin and daughter Frances, Mrs. Vollmer.
Frank and James Becker of Sanborn, Mr. and Mrs. Marek and daughter of River Falls, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Mertens of Jordan; Judge J.J. Moriarty, Judge F.J. Connolly and H.M. Grosser of Shakopee; Dr. J.W. Tiede and Tom and Jim Keogh of Le Center, and many others from Jordan and nearby communities.
