Lorna Faye Petersen wrote about her grandfather Joseph Welter's death, "Grandpa (Joseph) Welter had beautiful white hair and a moustache - we would laugh at his nightly ritual of finding his cap and wearing it to bed. The nurses at the Tuberculosis Sanitarium spoke of his wanting to wear a nightcap there too. He spent about two years in the sanitarium because of having tuberculosis. ( I spent four years in the same institution for the same reason). It was right after I graduated from Teaching School. Grandpa was on leave from the Sanitarium after Christmas 1946. One night of twenty below zero or lower he and "Jack" (son Clarence Nickolas "Jack" Welter) began walking back to Ray's (son Ray Patrick Welter). They had been to a tavern. We assume Grandpa became exhausted, confused or even had a heart attack trying to find his way back to Ray's. He was found frozen to death. He had a drinking problem"

According to family tradition, Myrtle went againt her family's wishes when she married Joseph Welter, mainly because he was a Catholic. They never had any contact with her or forgave her for marrying him for the rest of their lives.

Joseph Welter was born June 17,1875, the son of Nick and Anna Welter. He married Myrtle Harshaw on August 25, 1897 in Wadena, MN. Myrtle was born on August 23, 1876, the daughter of Robert J. and Mary Elizabeth (McNea) Harshaw. The Harshaws came to New York Mills in the 1890's and farmed on what is known as the Brick house, currently owned by the Salathe family. They had two children: Myrtle and Uri, who died in infancy.

Robert J. Harshaw was born October 21, 1842, in Ireland and Mary Elizabeth (McNea) Harshaw was born August 23, 185 5, in Canada. They were married in London, Ontario, Canada in June, 1875.

Joseph and Myrtle Welter had eight children: Leona Petersen, Ray Welter, Mabel Brill and Jack Welter all of New York Mills- Lloyd of Brecken ridge, MN., Robert of Wadena, MN., and Charlotte Mueller of New York Mills, all deceased; and Susanna, who died in infancy. Leona now lives at N. Y. Mills, Elders Home.
